ÁGUAS DE OXALÁ

Last Sunday in January since 1995

The traditional procession is held annually on the last Sunday of January and celebrates African culture through the streets of downtown Araras to the Santa Cruz Church, where the steps are washed. This activity is considered sacred, with the participation of the community, many groups of African-based religions, and the entire population is welcome to participate.

In 2024, we celebrate the act of Águas de Oxalá with hundreds of people celebrating together with different ylês, Umbanda and Candomblé terreiros that collectively build this activity that has already become a tradition in the city of Araras.

The most important message of the procession is that respect for human beings is maintained, with peace, joy and asé.

It is a celebration connected to black ancestry and a way of protecting and maintaining the memory of people of African origin.
